Pregnancy fitness workshop

Lifecare is partnered with FitRight to offer PregEd workshops, full of essential information that every pregnant woman should know. Attending FitRight’s pregnancy fitness education workshop PregEd run at Southcare Physiotherapy will give you essential information about safe exercises for pregnancy and beyond. You’ll learn it’s about much more than just pelvic floor exercises! 

Attend at any stage of your pregnancy however the earlier you attend the better, as the information we cover is about preventing problems rather than waiting until they actually occur. This workshop also includes an individual Real Time Ultrasound assessment of your pelvic floor to ensure that you are correctly activating these important muscles.

FitRight’s PregEd workshop is the perfect complement to the antenatal classes you will attend (provided by your hospital) and is highly recommended if you’re looking at attending our pregnancy fitness classes too.  

In this three hour interactive workshop with an experienced physiotherapist, topics covered include: 

·      Your pelvic floor muscles – their function, how they are affected by pregnancy and birth, how to train them with kegel exercises, and we finish the workshop with an individual assessment of your pelvic floor muscle activation via a real time ultrasound scan of your lower abdomen.

·      Safe abdominal muscle training during and after pregnancy

·      Optimal exercise during and after pregnancy

·      How to prevent and manage back pain and pain in other areas of your body

·      How physiotherapists can assist with labour, post caesarean section, and with breastfeeding.

SouthCare Antenatal Hydrotherapy classes are water-based exercise sessions offered from 14 weeks of pregnancy, involving exercise such as cardio, stretching, general strengthening, pelvic floor and deep abdominal exercises. A great way to meet other expectant mothers and let the water take the weight off your joints. 

We will need to know who your doctor is prior to the class as we do require a clearance from them, however many have given us a blanket referral for all their patients - so just contact us and we can let you know.

Clinical Exercise classes are 60 minute sessions run by physiotherapists. Each patient receives a tailored program at every session. As Clinical Exercise classes is based around optimal posture as well as pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscle activation, it is an ideal way to exercise during pregnancy.

Pregnant clients are able to attend our regular studio Clinical Exercise Classes following an initial assessment with one of our Physiotherapists. Clinical Exercise Classes are able to be modified to account for the changes of pregnancy allowing pregnant clients to continue to exercise safely under the supervision of a Physiotherapist.

pregnancy pilates classes

Lifecare is proud to partner with FitRight to offer Bump&Me 6 week pregnancy pilates courses. These are suitable for women at any stage of pregnancy with any level of fitness and pilates experience. Classes are conducted and supervised by experienced physiotherapists, and involve an hour of prenatal pilates type exercise with a focus on pelvic floor activation, stretching, toning, posture, breathing and relaxation - using exercise balls, therabands (resistance bands) and hand weights.

Bookings are subject to the completion of a FitRight initial assessment, either as part of a FitRight PregEd workshop (see above) or an individual assessment. Individual assessments can be made by calling Southcare and asking for a 'FItRight Assessment.

Active Labour Workshop is a class for expectant mothers and partners from 30 weeks onwards. These classes complement classes run by midwives, with the focus being on coping techniques for those women who want to try and have a vaginal delivery. These include:

  • Positioning for labour

  • Using TENS

  • Pelvic floor preparation
